Q.
- I've heard we can only use barbless hooks now.
Is this true?
A. -
Yes. Anglers interested in conservation have been using barbless hooks for a long time. It's well-known that barbless hooks give a fish a better chance at survival if you choose to release it. Several local fishing guides also report that they have not yet lost a single fish, and that indeed they feel that a fish is actually easier to hook with a barbless hook than a barbed one.

Q.
- Can we fish for Coho in the Campbell River area?
A. - Yes, you may keep 2 fin-clipped Coho salmon per person per day as of July
1st, 2004 with a possession limit of 4 Coho salmon.
Q.
- Are they endangered?
A. - Feisty fighters, Coho Salmon provide great action to sport fishing enthusiasts each summer. Their numbers have steadily decreased over the past 5 or 6 years for various reasons including changing ocean conditions and stream degradation. Many new measures are being implemented to enhance Coho numbers, including a ban on the commercial Coho fishery along with catch and release and selective fishery policies as previously mentioned.
Q.
- How was the Chinook fishing in the summer 2003 season?
A. -
Excellent! Saltwater anglers regularly reported limits of 2 Chinook Salmon each day, averaging between 8 and 30 pounds with the biggest concentration in the 14 -25 lb range.
Q.
- What are the limits?
A. -
You may catch up to 4 salmon per day, 2 of which may be Chinook. The possession limit is two day's catch.
Q.
- When do you catch each type of fish?
A. -
Although you may fish for any type of Salmon at any time, each type of salmon has a "season" when it is most plentiful. See the salmon fishing calendar below.
Q.
- Are you involved in conservation?
A. - Absolutely. Go to"about Warren" to read about his involvement with the Ministry of Fisheries and
see the "Conservation"
page to read about the very successful net-pen rearing program.

Fishing
Calendar ...the
long story
April,
May & June
bring an equal mix of 2-4 year old Spring Salmon of 10 - 20 pounds and sub-legal yearlings, as well as some Coho Salmon (also known as Silvers), ranging from sub-legal juveniles to 3 & 4 pounders.
The summer days are long in Campbell River - it's daylight from 4 in the morning until 10:30 at night, so there is plenty of time for fishing! This quieter time of year, it's peaceful and serene with few boats and lots of bait in the water for feeding the Bald Eagles..
July
and August
see increases in size and numbers of Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon in the Campbell River area. In 1999 numbers of sockeye decreased from the previous year and was closed for retention by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
An excellent run of Pink Salmon continued through September. Growing catches of halibut, snapper and cod were a bonus enjoyed by many sports fishermen. Those fishing trends are expected to continue next year.
